Opening Event 4 November

AA Exhibitions ARCHIZINES | Front Members’ Room | 5 November – 14 December 2011 | Monday to Friday 10am–7pm | Saturday 10am–3pm

Architectural Association | 36 Bedford Square | London WC1B 3ES | www.aaschool.ac.uk

Curated by Elias Redstone, ARCHIZINES celebrates the recent resurgence of independent architectural publishing. The AA exhibition showcases 60 of these magazines, fanzines and journals from over 20 countries; from photocopied and print-on-demand newsletters to widely distributed magazines. Each magazine is available to read in the exhibition along with video interviews with their creators talking about the relationship between architecture and publishing. An accompanying catalogue published by Bedford Press and featuring not only profiles of all 60 archizines but essays from a number of their editors will be launched at the opening.

ARCHIZINES LIVE Saturday 5 November | 3pm AA Soft Room | A selection of editors of publications on view in the exhibition will discuss their work in an event hosted by curator Elias Redstone in the AA’s new Soft Room.

GENERALIST at ARCHIZINES EXHIBITION October 31st, 2011

GENERALIST in Archi Zines Collection

ARCHI ZINES is a showcase of new fanzines, journals and magazines from around the world that provide an alternative discourse to the established architectural press. Launched by Elias Redstone, with art direction by Folch Studio, the project celebrates and promotes publishing as an arena for architectural commentary, criticism and research, and as a creative platform for new photography, illustration and design.

Alternative and independent publishing has had a dynamic and important relationship with architecture over the years, with prolific moments in the 1960s, 1970s and 1990s. A recent resurgence has seen new titles emerging in many countries, from Argentina, Belgium and Chile to the UK and USA. ARCHI ZINES brings together this international collection of publications for the first time as an important resource for architects, designers, critics, photographers and anyone interested in discussing the buildings and spaces we inhabit.

ARCHI ZINES is an expanding archive of the best publications from 2000s to the latest releases, and is growing as new titles and issues are acquired... read more

Review on our latest Issue "Saving | Sparen"
at BaunetzWoche No. 213

Florian Heilmeyer writes (sorry, in German only):
"Genau! Sehr gut!

IN GENERAL with Karl-Heinz Petzinka

After the 2008 real estate crisis and the 2009 financial crisis, after scores of governmental aid packages for private-sector businesses, after Greece’s quasi-bankruptcy, and beneath the Damocles sword of devaluation experienced by some EU countries as their ratings fell from triple-A to double-A, the economic developments have recently shown a political reaction: Shortly before the start of the collective World Cup frenzy, the government has gotten the so-called austerity package on its way.

Never before was the German national debt as high as it is now. That’s a statement whose significance—in light of whirling-Dervish-like spiraling debt—will likely already be outdated and replaced by the end of this sentence, but certainly by the end of this text. In its 2010/2 issue titled Saving, GENERALIST wants to deal with a constraint that now seems relevant—not only in regard to the energy industry, but also on a societal level.

THE ACTUAL CALL FOR PAPER ** ABOUT SAVING August 1st, 2010

dsc_0030
dsc_0011We proudly present our NEW Issue!
Yes we do – and we are happy!

The 4th GENERALIST is about
"USE & HABIT"

What happens to the architecture after it has left the architect's office, when the tradesmen are gone, when the photographers have completed their task? What happens to the architecture when it is handed over to its true destiny – when, to put it quite simply, it is used? And furthermore: Wouldn't it clarify questions about the sense and senselessness of architecture – within the time frame in which the theses put forth as part of the design are proven to be correct, incorrect, or inconsequential?

The issue GENERALIST ‘Use and Habit’ tries to approach this interdependency on a phenomenological level. We collected stories: stories about the use of spaces and the habits reflected in them; about the non-physical transformation of architecture in the utilization process.

flyer_ingeneral_morger GENERALIST – Magazine for Architecture welcomes you all
to IN GENERAL: the Live-Interview series, that portraits one personality in the field of architecture.

Meinrad Morger, Head of Morger Dettli Architects, based in Basel, and P Professor for Design & Architectural Typologies at the faculty of architecture finished his first semester of teaching at the TU Darmstadt. A good moment to ask: how was it?

We will discuss with him the phenomena of swiss architecture, how minimalistic music has an effect on his design and – by the way – who is this person, that says about himself, that he is not very entertaining?

on July 21rst 2010 from 6 pm onwards
in the ‘Kuhle’, Foyer of the Architecture Faculty
El Lissitzky Strasse 1, 64278 Darmstadt

And after the Interview we proudly present our new issue "Use and Habit"

In architecture magazines and newspaper supplements, buildings are generally discussed as being innovations or classics. There we see illustrations of built works, models, and plans. And we read texts about design approaches, construction technologies and who owns what. But the phase from when the first user moves in until protection is granted by the landmarks preservation council – or the building is demolished: the aspect of ongoing communication between the building and its user, appears to be a blind spot in the discourse.

What happens to the architecture after it has left the architect‘s office, when the tradesmen are gone, when the photographers have completed their task? IN GENERAL

The live-interview series is going on: Björn Hekmati and Adeline Seidel have Prof. Manfred Hegger as their guest.

12. November 2009 || 19 pm at Central Station Darmstadt

This wintersemester GENERALIST welcomes you to IN GENERAL again: the live-interview series that portraits one personalty.

Manfred Hegger is a well-known member of the Faculty of Architecture at the TU Darmstadt, holding the chair of Architecture & Energy Efficiency. A few days ago he and a team of his staff and students of Darmstadt's architecture Department won the Solar-Decathlon for the second time. It is is almost impossible not to come across his name when engaging with architecture and sustainability – but what is driving him beside his work at the university? What are the topics that interest him most? What are his points of view - and what were his most formative experiences?

The interview is part of the Sichten13 program - the yearly exhibition of the architecture faculty TU Darmstadt.
