Curated by Elias Redstone, ARCHIZINES celebrates the recent resurgence of independent architectural publishing. The AA exhibition showcases 60 of these magazines, fanzines and journals from over 20 countries; from photocopied and print-on-demand newsletters to widely distributed magazines. Made by architects, artists and students, these archizines offer an important, and often radical, addition to architectural discourse. Each magazine is available to read in the exhibition along with video interviews with their creators talking about the relationship between architecture and publishing. An accompanying catalogue published by Bedford Press and featuring not only profiles of all 60 archizines but essays from a number of their editors will be launched at the opening.
ARCHIZINES LIVE Saturday 5 November | 3pm AA Soft Room | A selection of editors of publications on view in the exhibition will discuss their work in an event hosted by curator Elias Redstone in the AA’s new Soft Room.

GENERALIST at ARCHIZINES EXHIBITION October 31st, 2011

GENERALIST in Archi Zines CollectionARCHI ZINES is a showcase of new fanzines, journals and magazines from around the world that provide an alternative discourse to the established architectural press. Launched by Elias Redstone, with art direction by Folch Studio, the project celebrates and promotes publishing as an arena for architectural commentary, criticism and research, and as a creative platform for new photography, illustration and design.
Alternative and independent publishing has had a dynamic and important relationship with architecture over the years, with prolific moments in the 1960s, 1970s and 1990s. A recent resurgence has seen new titles emerging in many countries, from Argentina, Belgium and Chile to the UK and USA. ARCHI ZINES brings together this international collection of publications for the first time as an important resource for architects, designers, critics, photographers and anyone interested in discussing the buildings and spaces we inhabit.
ARCHI ZINES is an expanding archive of the best publications from 2000s to the latest releases, and is growing as new titles and issues are acquired... read more

Review on our latest Issue "Saving | Sparen"at BaunetzWoche No. 213
Florian Heilmeyer writes (sorry, in German only):
"Genau! Sehr gut!

IN GENERAL with Karl-Heinz Petzinka

remarks about submissions (PDF)
After the 2008 real estate crisis and the 2009 financial crisis, after scores of governmental aid packages for private-sector businesses, after Greece’s quasi-bankruptcy, and beneath the Damocles sword of devaluation experienced by some EU countries as their ratings fell from triple-A to double-A, the economic developments have recently shown a political reaction: Shortly before the start of the collective World Cup frenzy, the government has gotten the so-called austerity package on its way.
Never before was the German national debt as high as it is now. That’s a statement whose significance—in light of whirling-Dervish-like spiraling debt—will likely already be outdated and replaced by the end of this sentence, but certainly by the end of this text. In its 2010/2 issue titled Saving, GENERALIST wants to deal with a constraint that now seems relevant—not only in regard to the energy industry, but also on a societal level.

We proudly present our NEW Issue!Yes we do – and we are happy!
The 4th GENERALIST is about
"USE & HABIT"
What happens to the architecture after it has left the architect's office, when the tradesmen are gone, when the photographers have completed their task? What happens to the architecture when it is handed over to its true destiny – when, to put it quite simply, it is used? And furthermore: Wouldn't it clarify questions about the sense and senselessness of architecture – within the time frame in which the theses put forth as part of the design are proven to be correct, incorrect, or inconsequential?
The issue GENERALIST ‘Use and Habit’ tries to approach this interdependency on a phenomenological level. We collected stories: stories about the use of spaces and the habits reflected in them; about the non-physical transformation of architecture in the utilization process.
