Download HERE (pdf) of this Issue

Dedicated to the topic „use & habit“ – we ask: What happens to the architecture after it has left the architect’s office, when the tradesmen are gone, when the photographers have completed their task? What happens to the architecture when it is handed over to its true destiny – when, to put it quite simply, it is used? And furthermore: Wouldn’t it clarify questions about the sense and senselessness of architecture – within the time frame in which the theses put forth as part of the design are proven to be correct, incorrect, or inconsequential?

The theme concerns the issue of the difficult interrelationship of enclosed and social space. This issue is one of the most significant and most fundamental ones confronting our profession. If architecture is a communication medium for society, and if a design always also includes a social act of making distinctions, then expanding the examination of architecture – to include manners of use and habits of the users of so-called ‘finished’ projects – appears to make sense in terms of the sociological enlightenment of architecture (cf. Heike Delitz: Architektursoziologie. Bielefeld: transkript Verlag, 2009, p. 112ff).

How, in other words, is the enclosed space interwoven with the social space that unfolds within? How does it influence incidents and stories that take place within it, and how do these, in turn, change its quality?

The issue GENERALIST ‘Use and Habit’ tries to approach this interdependency on a phenomenological level. We collected stories: stories about the use of spaces and the habits reflected in them; about the non-physical transformation of architecture in the utilization process.
With spatial stories and with story spaces, we hope to capture the incidental aspects of architecture in use, and at the same time, to learn how to better understand its everyday significance.
